Summer 2009 School of the Arts Schedule
Registration is currently underway for fall 2009, but many exciting classes still remain during the summer.
La Jolla Studio
Here is a chance to enjoy the pleasure of discovery, broaden your horizons,
and give your work a new distinctive look as you try a selection of out-of
the-ordinary papers for watercolor. We will explore techniques for using
Yupo, Masa, Aquarius, hot press, and other less well known watercolor
papers and alternatives, all provided for you and covered by your materials
fee. Classes will include daily demonstrations, assisted painting, and
critique focusing on color, content, and composition, as well as techniques
involved in using the materials. Painters using acrylics in a transparent
manner are also welcome. Papers will be provided!
Mon–Thur, 9:30 AM–3:30 PM (1 hour break)
July 27–30 (4 days)
La Jolla Studio
$160/180 + $16 mat. fee (to be paid at first class meeting)
Materials: You will need to bring only your usual watercolor painting
supplies, including paint, palette, backing board and clips, water containers,
and brushes. Also suggested are a spray bottle, Kleenex or toilet tissue,
a rag, an old bath towel, an old toothbrush, pencil, eraser, and resources
such as sketchbook, photos, or clippings. You may wish to bring watercolor
crayons or pencils if you have them and a small amount of acrylic matte
medium to use as glue in case you find that you want to include some collage
techniques in your artwork.
Come take a two day tour of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy. You
will learn to paint bamboo and write the calligraphy of bamboo using bamboo
brushes, ink, and color on rice paper. Enjoy “tea washing” your
paintings as well. Advanced students will further explore the dance of the
brush in abstract calligraphic expressions, using a variety of brushes and
paper, including textured paper.

Sat–Sun, 10 AM–3:30 PM (1/2 hour break)
Aug.1–2 (2 days)
La Jolla Studio
$110/125
Materials: Chinese art supplies for new students will be available for
purchase at the first class meeting (e-mail jbrushwrk@aol.com for more
details) Other art supplies necessary for the workshop are: two water
containers (such as margarine-size plastic containers); a watercolor palette
or several plastic or ceramic plates for mixing colors; a pad of newsprint
12” x 18” or larger, a roll of toilet tissue paper or paper
towels; stack of newspaper; a piece of black felt material, available
at fabric stores, approximately 4’ wide to cover the table where
you work.
Beginning and experienced artists alike will enjoy this spontaneous printmaking
process. Often considered the most painterly of printmaking techniques,
monotypes allow for a broad range of expression and experimentation. Using
water-based inks, a variety of beginning and advanced techniques will be
demonstrated by the instructor, including additive and subtractive mark
making, layering, and multiple-pass prints. One-on-one attention will help
each student best express and explore their own goals and ideas.
Mon–Thur, 10 AM–4 PM (1 hour break)
Aug 10– 13 (4 days)
La Jolla Studio
$160/180 + $40 mat. fee
Materials: A materials fee of $40 will cover ink and paper, along with
other durable materials. Please bring a smock or apron, notebook, paintbrushes,
stamps, stencils, materials for making textures, and specialty or collage
papers; printmaking materials such as brayers are also useful.
We will explore the broad variety of pen and ink techniques both in the
studio and one day on location in beautiful La Jolla. Students will learn
about the many techniques of dip pens, ballpoint pens, and an assortment
of other pens. The last day we will experiment with adding color to our
pen and ink drawings. All levels, from beginning to advanced, are welcome.
Lori always has new ideas and techniques to share with students who have
previously taken classes. Appropriate for adults and teens.
Mon–Fri, 10 AM–2 PM
Aug. 17–21 (5 days)
La Jolla Studio
$160/180
Materials: Dip pens with several different width nibs, a bottle of waterproof
India ink, a ballpoint pen, and any pens you would like to try. I will
have small watercolor kits for those who don’t have their own watercolors.
Bring a sketch pad, 8” x 10” or bigger. A pad of bristol board,
velum finish, works well, but if you can’t get one, just bring the
paper or pad you have. We will talk about what kind of watercolor paper
you will need if you would like to try watercolor.
Artists enjoy painting the golden hour because everything becomes progressively
more interesting and exciting as shadows lengthen and one is forced to
work quickly. Daily demonstrations in oil, pastel, and watercolor will
be short to allow students time to work. Since instruction is individual,
artists at any level may participate and paint whatever type of scene
they prefer. On the first day we will meet at Cormorant Rock on Sunset
Cliffs Boulevard between Osprey and Froude in Ocean Beach. We will do
our best to be located near restroom facilities, but there is no guarantee.
We will choose new locations as the class progresses. Class size is limited.

Aug. 10–14 (5 days)

introduction to basic drawing techniques for beginners. Through examples
and demonstrations we will concentrate on finding proportion, developing
shading, establishing just enough perspective, recognizing negative shapes,
and developing a quick, fluid contour line. For questions e-mail igronborg@sbcglobal.net

San Diego/Park Blvd Studio Classes
This Sunday class is for artists who want to draw or paint from the same
life model in a short or long pose. There will be several poses and models
throughout the eight weeks. A monitor will be present at each class to arrange
the schedule and the model’s poses. Walk-in students are welcome.

June 7–July 26 (8 weeks)
San Diego/Park Blvd Studio
$130/150; $20/23 per class

Sculpture is mass, the appearance of movement, and balance. By sculpting
small quick figures (sketches), students train the eye to capture these
elements. The first two days will include sculpting several figures and
short lectures on theory and techniques. Three days will be dedicated to
a single pose of a female model.
Mon–Fri, 10 AM–4 PM (1 hour break)
July 27–31 (5 days)
San Diego/Park Blvd Studio
$225/260 (includes model)
Materials: Clay is available for purchase in class for $10, armature
used for multiple “sketches,” for $20. Information: www.sculpturehome.com.
Maybe you have already raided your grandmother’s attic, endless
resale, antique, and junk stores, and “have stuff, will glue.”
If not, begin to collect now: papers, fabrics, labels, photos— old
and new—stamps, stencils, old letters, newspapers, especially foreign
ones, anything that speaks to you. Things will sparkle at you and say “Choose
Me!” You can work on paper, Masonite, stretched canvas, or an old
cookie sheet—this work is intuitive. The main rule is to have fun
and to learn from each other.
Mon–Wed, 10 AM–3 PM (1 hour break)
Aug 3–5 (3 days)
San Diego/Park Blvd Studio
$130/150
Materials: Matte medium, gel medium for heavier pieces; glue stick for
light pieces. Scissors and/or mat knife; 2–3” brayer; 100
lb. paper or heavier OR stretched canvas 14” x 18” OR smaller

hands); We will talk in class about other materials, but if you have favorites,
bring them: watercolors, oil pastels, colored pencils, acrylics, etc.
All levels of experience, zero on up. Wear seriously comfy clothes.
Finish or create your own artworks in our spacious studio for the entire
week in the company of like-minded students! You can leave your set-ups
all week.

shading. We will also learn how to break down the form into geometric shapes.
Composition and design concepts will be explored as well.

Aug 17–19 (3 days)
San Diego/Park Blvd Studio

with at least 50 lb. or better weight paper; thin- and thick-nib black
permanent markers; ebony pencil; kneaded eraser—or any other materials
you wish to use.
Using colorful wool fibers, a modernized ancient technique, some creative
designing, and a lot of elbow grease, you will create a beautiful and feels-so-soft
felt square in a few hours. It may not be large enough to build a yurt,
but it will make a lovely wall hanging or become part of another fiber piece.
During the felting process there will be lots of time to visit and laugh
with other participants and you won’t need to go to the gym to work
out that day! All materials are provided for you, including a selection
of wool rovings and the equipment needed to create your own original 18”
x 18” piece of handmade felt. Wear clothes and shoes that may get
wet. Questions: e-mail Jane at PlainJaneStudio@gmail.com

Tue, 9 AM–12 noon

Hold on to your hats! We’ll be immersed in paint, paper, cloth,
and glue for 3 full days. We’ll start by creating backgrounds on paper
and cloth then learn how to collage, draw, stamp, stencil, and sew—all
to make art. You’ll learn tons of techniques and be inspired to continue
in your own studio or journal. Class will be inspirational, positive, and
fun, with lots of sharing, laughing, and learning from the others in the
class. All levels of experience are welcome. Questions: e-mail Jane at PlainJaneStudio@gmail.com
