Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, Berthe Morisot, Andre Derain: these great masters took painting to fascinating new levels. You will learn about the history of these groundbreaking artists and experience painting in their thrilling styles. This class will explore their techniques, starting with the Impressionists, then moving on to the exciting, independent Fauves. We will use bright colors and simplified compositions and images with a loose style of painting and strong brushwork, keeping the images simple, without details. I will provide images to work from, and you may also bring your own.

Learning and understanding values in painting are key to success with color. We will explore elements of form, color, line, and texture, along with composition, using oil or acrylic paint on canvas. We will do exercises taking a photo image into your own Impressionist painting and then into a Fauvist painting. I will demonstrate each style of painting. You may follow along with planned exercises, or you can choose to work independently with your own images and receive individual instruction.

Serious beginners and seasoned painters are all welcome.
