Free Art Classes for Teens (13–18 years old)

Free Teen Art is a free program for teens, who are interested in art-making as an enrichment activity that goes beyond making crafts. The aim of the program is to provide a space for youth to create art, share stories, collaborate, explore, and identify new ways to use art in their lives. The Athenaeum offers facilities, resources, guidance, instruction, and support. The open studio program includes a rotation of multidisciplinary art instructors offering workshops in their respective fields, as well as curricular activities that involve the use of the Athenaeum library resources as a starting point for projects. Activities include drawing, painting, research, and introduction to various media.

California native, Jennifer McHugh, is a full-time abstract artist and art instructor.  Creativity and art classes were always a part of her life, but when she was a new mother, her need for more creativity led her to abstract painting and she found the missing piece. In 2015, after years of abstract art classes and showing art locally, Jennifer left her 20-year career of teaching and traveling the world as an English instructor. When she started teaching local art workshops and classes in 2019, it was a natural transition, as it blended her two passions. Jennifer has explored many styles to help her evolve as an artist, but her work is always process-driven.  Guided by intuition and spontaneity, she translates her inspiration without any idea of what the final product will be.

Jennifer paints and hosts art events in her backyard studio, and teaches workshops, classes and occasional retreats in California and Baja. Her work is currently sold in galleries and boutiques throughout the U.S. and hangs in many homes worldwide.

The program is free and teens can register by clicking the “REGISTER” button above. For additional information, please call (858) 454-5872 or email us at info@ljathenaeum.org. The main venue for the program is the Athenaeum’s art studio at 1008 Wall Street, entrance on Girard Avenue.
