Born in Lago (Calabria), Italy in 1932, Italo Scanga was an internationally-renowned artist of wide range and vision. His work on display throughout the Athenaeum reflects the statement written by his colleague Ernest Silva for this show: “Each series of works was a search for sublime moments that were made material in his painting and sculpture …” Much of Scanga’s art reflects the extensive collection of found objects that he kept in his Pacific Beach studio. Eighteen works are shown in the Main Gallery, including acrylic and ink on magazines, watercolors of food can labels, acrylic and watercolor on antique sheet music, and glass trees. The pieces span forty-five years of work, from photographs commissioned by Look magazine in 1957–58 to brass candlesticks made from 1999 to 2001. In the Rotunda Gallery, Multiples presents twelve monotypes and prints, as well as ceramics and glass works. Italo Scanga and Contemporaries, books is in the North Reading Room. Italo Scanga earned BA and MFA degrees from Michigan State University and was professor in the Visual Arts Department at the University of California, San Diego. He died in 2001.
