Photographer Grace Bell has been photographing jazz musicians and performances for more than 35 years, selections of which are presented in the Athenaeum’s Clayes and Rotunda Galleries. The artist noticed there were recurring themes in the motion and rhythm of the musicians and from this the idea for the show was born. Her photographs seek to capture the moment when the musician transcends time and enters the space of creation. Her photography has been used for numerous album covers, magazine and newspapers and she has documented many jazz festivals throughout the country.
