The Athenaeum and University of California, San Diego’s Geisel Library present a joint exhibition of work from long-time San Diego resident Joyce Cutler-Shaw. The Athenaeum presents a retrospective of her artist’s books from the permanent collection; Geisel Library presents Alphabet Bones, a piece that is on permanent display, and Brain Project, from October 5 through 27.  Joyce Cutler-Shaw (1932-2018) is a multi-disciplinary artist whose oeuvre includes drawings, artist’s books, installations and public commissions. Her subjects are human identity and the natural world; her themes are evolution, survival and the cycle of life. She is a member of the first graduating class of UCSD’s MFA program in Visual Arts, 1972.
