SELECTIONS FROM THE ATHENAEUM’S FRED & ERIKA TORRI ARTISTS’ BOOKS COLLECTION:
Claire Van Vliet and The Janus Press
February 17–March 24, 2018
The Athenaeum has collected the work of Claire Van Vliet and the work from her Janus Press for many years and has now a sizable collection. The Athenaeum recently received a donation of a book from her private collection in honor of the Athenaeum’s Artists’ Book Collection, which was created for her in the sixties by the well-known artist Dieter Roth. All of Van Vliet’s work in the collection is presented in this exhibition. Claire Van Vliet is a graphic artists, printmaker, book maker, paper maker and the founder of Janus Press, which she founded in 1955 in San Diego, when she attended SDSU. She spent some time in Europe, taught in Philadelphia at the Philadelphia School of Art and the Museum College of Art and moved in 1966 to Vermont, where she also settled the Janus Press.
