SELECTIONS FROM THE FRED & ERIKA TORRI ATHENAEUM ARTISTS’ BOOKS COLLECTION
British Artists
October 20, 2020–March 27, 2021
In honor of the UK’s Zandra Rhodes, featured in the Clayes and Rotunda galleries, British artists’ books have taken residence in the cabinets of the Melissa and Max Elliott Reading Room.
Elevenses, is a colorful book published by Granary Press (2017). It is a collaboration of New York poet Charles North and artist Trevor Winkfield, a transplant from Leeds in the UK. North says the idea came from their morning coffee meetups that resonated with the British breaks termed elevensies. North’s text is in the form of peripatetic, humorous, and inventive diary entries in love with words. Winkfield’s interest in medieval art can be seen in the discrete soaked color planes of his images. For further information on Winkfield, read John Yau’s article in Hyperallergic (https://hyperallergic.com/428280/trevor-winkfield-saints-dancers-and-acrobats-tibor-de-nagy-gallery).
