The Acoustic Evenings series at the Athenaeum showcases some of the finest acoustic musicians in San Diego. Three acts fill each program and attentive audiences delight in the intimacy of the unplugged storytelling format. Refreshments are available at the intermission reception and post-concert meet-and-greet. San Diego Music Hall of Fame founder Jefferson Jay curates and hosts the concert series. The project advances the Athenaeum’s commitment to support diverse San Diego talent. Acoustic Evenings is an unforgettable and personal experience for San Diego music lovers.
Greg Douglass
Guitarist Greg Douglass has toured and recorded with Van Morrison, Duane Eddy, Link Wray, Hot Tuna, Dave Mason, and Eddie Money and co-wrote and played on the Steve Miller Band hit “Jungle Love.”
Blossom and Bloom
Blossom and Bloom is an organically grown local duet featuring legendary virtuoso Jeff Bloom on guitar, and vocals with Sandra Herrera on lead vocals and percussion. The San Diego Music Award-winning acoustic duo have been performing together at many of San Diego’s most prestigious venues, special events, coffee shops, and Farmer’s Markets throughout the city for the last 5 years.
Bloom originally gained much of his notoriety and fame from the 80s group Army of Love which opened for the Kinks with their songs played regularly on the 91X radio station. His evocative lead riffs and gliding rhythm guitar influences have been a staple in many local rock, reggae, and funk bands over his illustrious 40-year career. He has 4 original albums to his credit with his 2004 release of “New Style” which has become a timeless masterpiece.
Sandra Herrera is a homegrown female vocalist from La Jolla California. Her vocals are described as jazz-inspired inflections that are smooth and restrained. Sade covers she frequently performs showcase Herrera’s multitude of talent. Her musical credits are backing up the English Beat with the female trio Dub Daughters as well as performing with local rock phenomenons Stone Horse live and in the studio. In addition, she has become a crowd favorite whenever the Bloom All-Stars perform.
Ritmo Latino
Ritmo Latino is a supergroup of four friends who play some of the finest Latin music today in San Diego. Although all four, Victor Viberos, Hugo Anche, Daniel Aispuro, and Leonardo Lara, are very active with solo gigs, they came together to perform at the 2022 San Diego Music Hall of Fame 4th Annual Induction Ceremony to honor inductee Larry Zeiger. They tore the house down with their version of Zeiger’s “Meechu in Machu Picchu.” Their performance was so well-received, audiences needed more. We are honored that they will reunite for us to be part of Acoustic Evenings.
Generously partially underwritten by the Sleet Music Performance Fund in memory of Don Sleet, Down Beat Magazine acclaimed trumpeter of the year and leader of the CD "All Members"; Marshall C. Sleet, instrumental music coordinator & educator for the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District; Anna Mae Sleet, Choral director at La Mesa Jr High and La Pressa Middle School, and Jeffery Barnett Sleet, Cellist, and a member of the acclaimed San Diego Youth Symphony who passed away in 2022 at the age of 58.
