The Athenaeum STREAMING LIVE! continues with a special duo performance by pianist Gerald Clayton and trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos, who have enjoyed a rich artistic collaboration stretching back nearly two decades. A four-time Grammy nominee, Clayton is widely recognized as one of the leading jazz pianists of his generation. Son of bass legend John Clayton and a member of the family’s Clayton Brothers Quintet, his career includes performances with a constellation of major artists, including Charles Lloyd, John Scofield, Diana Krall, and Dianne Reeves. The New York Times wrote: “A remarkable player, he seems to understand what our ear wants—blooming harmony, melodic improvisations, firm landings—and how to deliver it.” Castellanos is one of San Diego’s most beloved jazz artists, having contributed to the jazz scene not only as our leading trumpeter but also as the curator of a decades-long weekly jam session and the San Diego Symphony’s jazz series, as resident composer for the San Diego Ballet, and as director of the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory. Castellanos is a longtime member of the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, performing around the world and recording with the acclaimed big band. He is a six-time San Diego Music Awards winner as Best Jazz Artist and also was named Artist of The Year.
