Harpist Naomi Alter received her Bachelor of Music degree in harp at Oberlin Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of Alice Chalifoux. She has studied with Jeanne Chalifoux at the Salzedo Harp Colony in Maine, and at Tanglewood Music Festival with Lucile Lawrence.
She has taught harp at Louisiana State University and performed with the Toledo, Baton Rouge, La Jolla, Palomar and Grossmont Symphonies. She has been a concerto soloist recently with the Poway Symphony Orchestra, the Song of the Angels Flute Orchestra and the Crown City Symphony in Pasadena.
Since 1987, Naomi has been performing at thousands of weddings and special events and teaching in the San Diego area.
Born in Hollywood, California, Jane Masur began studying flute at age 12. She attended San Diego State University where she studied with Fredrick Baker. Upon Graduation in 1972, Jane moved to Schoningen Germany and continued her musical pursuits as the Music Director for Realschule Schoningen, Niedersachsen, Germany. While in Germany, she also performed in various location in the region. Upon her return to the United States in 1975, Jane complete a Master’s Degree in Flute performance at SDSU continuing her studies with Damien Bursell-Hall. After receiving her Master’s degree, she continued studying with Sebastian Carratelli and Claude Monteux with whom she worked collaboratively until his death in 2012.
Ms. Masur has had the opportunity to perform in various ensembles throughout the San Diego area. Touring with the San Diego Choral Arts Ensemble, she performed in exciting venues throughout Germany, Austria, Italy, England and the Czech Republic. Jane soloed with the Poway Symphony Orchestra with harpist Naomi Alter.
Jane has maintained an active studio and served as President of the San Diego Flute Guild from 1994 to 2004 and President of the Music Teachers’ Association of California from 2019 to 2021. She is currently on the music faculty of Palomar College in the applied music program.
Free concerts at noon every other Monday from fall through spring . . . no wonder the Mini-Concerts are the longest-running and one of the most popular classical music series at the library! This series was founded by Glenna Hazleton in 1970 at the Athenaeum, and has been going strong ever since. The concerts feature both local and touring musicians, prize-winning students, university music faculty members, local chamber ensembles. . . and the repertoire also includes jazz, folk and world music. There are no reservations, no tickets . . . just line up at the side door of the Athenaeum before noon. (Donations are always welcome!) Mini-Concerts take place every other Monday at noon and last about an hour.
The concerts will be in person at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. There are no physical tickets for these events. Doors open at 11:50 a.m. Seating is first-come; first-served. These events will be presented in compliance with State of California and County of San Diego health regulations as applicable at the time of each concert.
