Free Art Classes for Teens (13–18 years old)
Free Teen Art is a free program for teens, who are interested in art-making as an enrichment activity that goes beyond making crafts. The aim of the program is to provide a space for youth to create art, share stories, collaborate, explore, and identify new ways to use art in their lives. The Athenaeum offers facilities, resources, guidance, instruction, and support. The open studio program includes a rotation of multidisciplinary art instructors offering workshops in their respective fields, as well as curricular activities that involve the use of the Athenaeum library resources as a starting point for projects. Activities include drawing, painting, research, and introduction to various media.
Ashley Bruce received a BA in Design for Theatre and Film from SDSU. She spent most of her career working in wardrobe departments on commercials, TV shows, and theaters such as the San Diego Opera and The Old Globe. After becoming a mom of two, she began pursuing her dream of creating and teaching art programs. Over the past decade, she has taught art classes in-person and online to adults and children. She also created and taught an art program for a local elementary school, giving art classes to over 600 kids every month. This is where she fell in love with teaching. Ashley loves inspiring others to find joy and peace in expressing themselves through art and creativity. Today, she homeschools her two teen boys, paints as often as possible, and is currently working on a new collection of pieces based on her family’s road life adventure over the past two years, traveling to all 48 US States and 3 Canadian Provinces. Next on the list are Hawaii and Alaska!
The program is free and teens can register by clicking the “REGISTER” button above. For additional information, please call (858) 454-5872 or email us at info@ljathenaeum.org. The main venue for the program is the Athenaeum’s art studio at 1008 Wall Street, entrance on Girard Avenue.
