“How far can we enter into a single moment, such that for that brief speck of time, for an instant, unison is registered?” This is the question that Charles Curtis poses in his liner notes for Tashi Wada’s Duets (2006–2008). Duets, starkly singular in focus and scope, centers around the concept of unison, complicated by issues of very gradual glissando, of descent—a process through which rich acoustical phenomena emerge, inviting the performers and listeners to deepen their perception ever further into a single moment.

Labyrinth | San Diego New Music

Friday, February 23, 2024
7:30 PM

San Diego New Music and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library present Labyrinth, a music and dance performance co-created by Kristopher and Dina Apple. Labyrinths have been used throughout history as devices for meditation, metaphors for storytelling, and as a bridge between the physical and metaphysical. Taking inspiration from these mythologies and practices, a cross-disciplinary ensemble weaves sound, movement, and text into a contemplative listening experience—a listening labyrinth. You are invited to the listening labyrinth—to follow the thread of now, gather your senses at each passing moment, and reflect on the potential for transformation.

Spolia | 15th Annual soundON Festival (Series)

January 5–7, 2023

7:30 PM

San Diego New Music and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library present the 2023 soundON Festival, exploring cutting-edge contemporary music from around the world, including rising international voices Yu Kuwabara (Japan), Adrian Demoč (Slovakia), Alyssa Aska (Austria), and D. Edward Davis (United States). Entitled Spolia, this year’s festival explores the traces of the past recast into unique new expressions, just as ancient artifacts are reincorporated into newer architecture to become spolia. Inspired by Katherine Balch’s Musica Spolia, this theme threads through works including Yu Kuwabara’s Five Images-In nomine and Adam Greene’s Memos, and works incorporating recorded sound fragments, like D. Edward Davis’s broad call and Kay He’s On the Rime of the Fading Forest.
