Day of the Dead/Dia de Los Muertos

October 13–October 31, 1992

The Athenaeum celebrated the traditional Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with an exhibition of an altarpiece comprised of original and hand-crafted elements from Mexico. The festival of the Day of the Dead is held over a three-day period, from October 31 through November 2, to commemorate those family members and friends who have died and to welcome the spirits during their annual visit to the land of the living. This is one of the most important celebrations of the year in Mexico, and is a joyful occasion marked by feasting, offerings to the dead, and a sense of sharing and good will throughout the community.
