Private Notations: Notebooks, diaries, sketchbooks, and wall drawings by Patricia Patterson
October 9–December 4, 1993
This exhibition provided viewers with an opportunity to glimpse into the private processes that are the building blocks of Patricia Patterson’s artwork: her notebooks, sketchbooks, and diaries. An observer of life, Patterson’s interest in the banal aspects of everyday existence provides subject matter, both visual and verbal, for her work. Here, in her journals, mundane elements such as reminders, “to do” lists, and descriptions of the day’s events are not only recorded, but also elevated, imbued with a sense of grandeur through the poetry of her words and the voluptuous color of the images. Sketches of family and friends, plant and animal life are often simply and minimally rendered, yet each conveys the rich and ephemeral qualities of life. The installation included word and image paintings applied directly to the gallery walls. The subject matter — friends from Ireland, animal life from Bataquitos lagoon, and accompanying text — was taken from pages in her notebooks and sketchbooks.
