Carmen: the Opera and the Artist
January 18–February 22, 1997
The original paintings, etchings, and sketches made by Spanish artist Miguel Ybáñez for the 1984 production of the opera, Carmen, for the Teatro alla Scala in Milan were presented, along with a selection of the artist’s oil paintings and collages. Before the Athenaeum’s exhibition, this unique collection was on exhibit at the Centro Cultural de Tijuana, but never before had they been shown in this country. They were from the collection of Filippo Floridia, a San Diego art collector and the man who first approached Ybáñez about designing the sets and costumes for the opera. The exhibition coincided with the opening of the San Diego Opera’s season opening production of Carmen.
