ERNEST SILVA
Volcanoes and Reading Lamps
May 3–June 14, 1997
New works by artist Ernest Silva, including painting, sculpture, and site-specific works. While the title reflects images Silva has used over the past two decades, the exhibition was created especially for the Athenaeum, and incorporated the artist’s visual sense of the library as a place to read, hear music, and view art. Combining images and poetry, many of the works had direct connections to the library; the latter part of the title, Reading Lamps, alludes to the sculpture displayed, many of which were actual lanterns that function as an integral part of the image. . In addition to the exhibition, the artist gave a walkthrough on Saturday, May 3, at 11:00 AM, and a poetry reading and discussion of his work on Wednesday, May 14, at 7:30 PM. Both were free and open to the public.
