New Works
July 29–September 2, 2000
Accompanying the J.S. Bach piano series by Gustavo Romero, the library presented an exhibition of new works by Rolf Händler, one of the most recognized artists from the former East Berlin. Since the reunification of Germany, Händler had employed a more radiant palette to evoke the inward life of the individual in his work. For this second Athenaeum exhibition, his new works included paintings and drawings with images of books and manuscripts, as well as original artists’ books and limited-edition sketchbooks. And Händler once again showed his famous envelope paintings—signature watercolor paintings on real envelopes the artist had received.
