A library is defined as a place where literary, musical, artistic, or reference materials are kept. In keeping with this mission, in 1991, Executive Director Erika Torri decided to document the exhibitions presented in our gallery by commissioning La Jolla-based artist Jennifer Atkinson to photograph artists who have presented one-person shows. The first portrait taken was that of Harry Sternberg, a long-time San Diego resident who passed away in 2001 and whose work is recognized nationally; he exhibited numerous times at the Athenaeum. Subsequently, artist Sibyl Rubottom began to document the exhibitions through the creation of a one-of-a-kind artist’s book for each exhibition presented in the Main Gallery. These artworks—black-and-white portraits and artist’s books—will be exhibited together in the Rotunda Gallery from November 23 through December 31, 2004, highlighting the range and scope of the Athenaeum’s exhibition program from 1991 to the present.
