The Southwest & Mexico: Celebrating the work of Frederic Whitaker and Eileen Monaghan Whitaker
September 24–November 5, 2011
With the cooperation of the Frederic Whitaker and Eileen Monaghan Whitaker Foundation, the exhibition contains approximately thirty watercolor-on-paper works over a fifty-year period by these long-time La Jolla artists, the first married couple to be designated Academicians at the National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts in New York. Known as “Mr. Watercolor,” Frederic Whitaker (1891–1980) began exhibiting watercolors in the 1940s, was elected President of the American Watercolor Society in 1949, and over his career received more than 150 awards. Eileen Monaghan Whitaker (1911–2005) was the recipient of 87 awards during her career. Their work includes street scenes, interesting buildings, and people performing daily tasks.
