The Athenaeum focuses on previous exhibitions in presenting this retrospective of the work of Phel Steinmetz (1944–2013). The photographer joined the Visual Arts faculty at the University of California, San Diego in 1971 after spending two years of casual study in the late 1960s in Carmel with Ansel Adams and Wyn Bullock. He has collaborated with other artists, including Eleanor Antin, Allen Kaprow, and Joyce Cutler-Shaw, whose works are in the Athenaeum’s artists’ book collection. Also in the collection are two artists’ books by Phel Steinmetz and Esther Barath, his wife.
