Build That Park!
August 17–September 11, 2021
Coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of Friendship Park located at the westernmost end of the U.S.-Mexico border, the Athenaeum is pleased to present BUILD THAT PARK!, the culmination of a four-phase design competition conceived of by San Diego architect James Brown, FAIA. The exhibition will unveil various responses to the challenge of creating a truly binational park, accessible to and shared by the people of both nations. Friendship Park is located at the U.S.-Mexico border where San Diego meets Tijuana on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Inaugurated in 1971 by First Lady Pat Nixon, the occasion was celebrated as the first step towards an envisioned binational park.
BUILD THAT PARK! is a project of The Friends of Friendship Park, a non-partisan, grassroots coalition of individuals and organizations advocating for increased public access to the historic meeting place on the US-Mexico border.
