Build That Park!
Coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of Friendship Park located at the westernmost end of the U.S.-Mexico border, the Athenaeum is pleased to present BUILD THAT PARK!, the culmination of a four-phase design competition conceived of by San Diego architect James Brown, FAIA. The exhibition will unveil various responses to the challenge of creating a truly binational park, accessible to and shared by the people of both nations.
BUILD THAT PARK! is a project of The Friends of Friendship Park, a non-partisan, grassroots coalition of individuals and organizations advocating for increased public access to the historic meeting place on the US-Mexico border.

Sue Whitman: Gallery 336
Sue Whitman will feature a series of collages created during the pandemic lockdown. Named after the apartment number at her retirement community, Whitman spent every day in Gallery 336 painting, drawing, and making mixed-media assemblages.
Whitman’s consuming interest in fine art took her from advanced studies in her native Cleveland, Ohio, to New York’s Parsons and the Clarence White School of Photography. She managed art exhibitions at the public library in Westport, Connecticut, organized traveling exhibitions throughout the school system, and exhibited outstanding local artists at the Yankee Doodle Fair.
Whitman has had solo exhibitions at the UCSD Faculty Club, Sherwood Square Gallery, and Underwater Explorers Club in the Bahamas, among many other institutions and galleries. She spent eight years as Public Relations Director of the Norton Museum of Art. To be near her two children, she moved to La Jolla, CA. Whitman previously exhibited Visions of Discovery at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in 2018.

Kathleen Marshall: Avignon
This work stems from a period over the past 10 years when I moved from dwelling to dwelling exploring the city of Avignon, France. During the COVID-19 confinement, I focused my own rooms at #6 rue de la Croix which are represented in this exhibition. Just before lockdown my daughter and I were asked to do a joint show at the Hotel La Mirande in Avignon — the exhibition was canceled due to the pandemic. A number of the works destined for that exhibition are also included here.
