FAIYA FREDMAN
She Who Knows and Is Unknown
November 20, 1999–January 15, 2000
Long-time San Diego Artist Faiya Fredman ended the 20th century and began the new one by filling the Athenaeum gallery with her unique population of goddesses. In media including paintings, prints, collages, and artists’ books, Fredman creates her own versions of ancient goddesses from approximately 6000 BC to 1500 BC, primarily in Turkey and Greece. In the series, which the artist worked on for three years, she used her imagination to bring these goddesses to life in a remarkable array of forms: for example, some pieces were presented on beeswax, and the exhibition incorporated a real beehive (without bees!).
