Books and Ideas in the Age of Anxiety; Selections from the Annex
January 22–March 4, 2000
San Diego artist Jean Lowe celebrated the new century with an engaging installation that represented her unique “take” on the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. Lowe transformed the gallery into a mini library, complete with books and decorative objects-almost all created in papier-mâché and enamel paint. The entire installation was planned to “jangle the compartmentalized ways we look at society,” said the artist. True to the spirit of her work, it was both amusing and thought provoking. Jean Lowe, a resident of San Diego since the mid-1980’s, received an MFA from UCSD, and has shown her work locally, nationally, and internationally.
