PHEL STEINMETZ
Human/Nature?
March 6–April 17, 1999
This exhibition consisted of photo-collages, also called photomaps, created by UCSD professor Phel Steinmetz. His method of connecting individual photos to each other in a formally interesting manner results in a scene that is rendered in both depth and width, more like the human eye perceives it. These collages deliver a large field of view, while maintaining the correct scale of objects in the photos. When the objects are collectively viewed as finished work, the collages result in stories and meanings that we can perceive. Phel Steinmetz has exhibited in the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Far East. His work is in both private and public international collections. He designed and implemented the photography program in the Visual Arts Department at UCSD. In 1994, he was awarded UCSD’s Distinguished Teaching Award.
