SELECTIONS FROM THE ATHENAEUM’S ERIKA AND FRED TORRI ARTISTS’ BOOKS COLLECTION
Richard Long
November 13–December 31, 2010
Richard Long began his art practice in the mid-sixties when the boundaries of what is considered art were expanded. His boundaries led to the countryside, primarily in Great Britain but also abroad, where his walks became works of art. As he says in his book Touchstones: “A walk . . . defines the form of the land. Walking the roads and paths is to trace a portrait of the country.” He reproduced his experience in sculptures and in artist’s books. If one were to leave behind a record of what nature looked like, Richard Long’s books would be the ticket.
