On the Road/An Artist’s Book of the Classic Novel by Jack Kerouac

In 2009 Ed Ruscha created a limited-edition artist’s book version of Kerouac’s 1951 novel On the Road (published 1957). Ruscha illustrated the book with photographs that he took, commissioned, or found. A selection of fifty-one framed images of the pages from Ruscha’s work is on display, courtesy of Gagosian Gallery. The Los Angeles-based Ruscha is one of the most prominent living artists today and is represented in the permanent collections of important museums throughout the country. His half-century of work is often inspired by the ironies and idiosyncrasies of life in the Los Angeles area.
